Dark Days
This time of year, that headline might
simply reflect that in much of the country, most of us go to work in the dark and
come home in the dark and never see our homes
in daylight except on weekends. These days, it
also reflects the kind of times we’re going
through and the fact that there’s no light at the
end of the proverbial tunnel. This issue reflects a
lot of that feeling and perception.
I wouldn’t necessarily call it the brighter side,
but our “deconstructing Obama” feature at least
has some positive reflections on the incoming
administration. What started out to be a quick question to several of this magazine’s
Editorial Advisory Board members turned into an expanded commentary by those
folks, expertly pulled together by our new associate editor Alyson Grala. Not everything that was said about the pending Obama administration was positive, but some
of it was, and the total body of commentary was at least interesting enough to bump
it up to our cover feature.
That said, our retail update, also by Alyson, paints a very bleak picture of that
sector as troubled consumers continue to tighten their purse strings. We talk about
the state of the market, such as it is, and the possible longer-term ramifications for
the retail industry (including bankruptcies, closures, repositionings, etc.)
And our market report on Edison/Woodbridge, along with our Market Watch
reports on the general office and industrial markets statewide bear out some
troubling, although not necessarily dire trends and numbers.
Much of this issue, however, is given over to a more pleasant topic. Again this
year, we profile “Women of Influence,” top real estate professionals who have
forged ahead in what has historically been a male-dominated industry to distinctly
make their mark. We asked each of them to answer the question, “What’s the key
issue for women in commercial real estate?” Surprisingly, many of the responses
from the more-than- 40 women eschewed gender-specific topics to focus on
industry-wide topics instead. While many gender-specific issues were indeed
raised, and for very good reason, the fact that more women are steering the other
way is a signal that in this industry, and in business in general, the whole gender
question is finally, and thankfully, going away.
More next month.
